Taking a Break: A Year Without Writing
The obligation to produce destroys the pleasure of creating.
Not a Goodbye
This isn't a goodbye, though it certainly feels momentous.
I am taking a year without writing.
However, it might be more accurate to say that I’ll be one year without publishing content.
Excited
For the first time since I started, I contemplated pausing publishing new content for a year. I surprised myself because I felt energized the moment I thought about it.
I realized that the newsletter has become a burden.
The obligation to produce destroys the pleasure of creating.
I am excited to remove this obligation and start creating for pleasure. Or maybe just hanging. Or maybe taking more time with my baby daughter. Or maybe taking more time to go running and biking.
Who knows, I can’t wait to have more free time.
Rationale
Once the feeling settled, my conscious mind started to come up with reasons to take a break:
I am running out of ideas for articles.
The ideas don’t come from the daily work; they are just intellectual reflections I haven’t tested in a real environment.
I want to do things for the sake of doing them.
I want to let my curiosity guide me in my free time.
See You Later
I have enjoyed writing and seeing the newsletter grow from one subscriber (Hi, Babyblue!) to more than 6,000. It has been quite the ride. It started with a different name; how many of you remember it was called GIMTEC? I started writing about Logic Gates 🤯.
Anyway, I’m excited about a whole year without the obligation to write.
See you later, and thanks to everyone for being there!
"The obligation to produce destroys the pleasure of creating". So true! A lightbulb moment for me reading this. Thanks for the thought-provoking articles Llorenç. Have fun!
Looking forward to seeing you back in a year!
